To Love Unconditionally (a poem)

My soul longs for the ability to love unconditionally, like Jesus loved,
unselfish and perfect with Godly humility.

I dwell on His words in me thirsting for wisdom, walking this world but wanting his kingdom;

I want to have charity that's my high desire, to love like a flaming and virtuous fire;

So much more esteemed is the virtue of Charity, unlike the sadness that has before encompassed me;

Charity never faileth this gift from above; it suffereth long because it's sincere love;

It beareth all things and endureth them too; evil subsides when it's in me and you;

I can't find the words how I want to express, the love for my wife and my sons when distressed;

If only they knew, how to reach to the Son, and Father and Spirit, who three are the one;

He gives through the Comforter, gifts they're unique, especially gifts to the needful and weak;

Our Alpha Omega, beginning and end, created the earth, and then became our friend;

Without help from him, we're eternally lost, can you imagine the pain and the cost;

Some day, a new earth will come down from the sky, and surely that day, I will break down and cry;

I've been through so much, few decisions were bad, but then there's a few, I can think of were sad;

We make decisions out of our knowledge, or based on research, but then, it's based in our heart;

 Sometimes we're sensitive to our better half, then sometimes we blow it, and create a big gap;

 God knows our heart when we're following him, He also knows that His light can get dim;

 We need to press on through our faith, not in doubt, whenever our feelings are not what’s involved;

 Faith is the substance of things we can’t see, faith is the still small voice that guides you and me;

 God knows our needs and his doors show the way, or even a window of opportunity;

 What's important for us, is we recognize the light, whether it feels, wrong or right;

 Spiritual lessons come at a cost, and through our ignorance, we can get lost;

 But then if we get on our knees and we pray, God’s intervention can show us the way;

 So don’t you feel sad if your feelings don’t show, which way the day will allow you to go;

 Depend on His love and His sovereignty, to give you the strength to endure through each day;

By Mark Aldrich (c)

I don't remember the day that I wrote this poem, but God knew my heart and granted my deep down desire to realize this gift in Christ. I wish I knew how many others have been granted this wish, for it comes through trials and tribulations that culminate in the ability to avoid bitterness, unforgiveness, resentment, grief, sorrow and pain. Not that we won't feel it when bad things happen, but we will turn our pride over into humility and prayer for the offending party or entity.

You see, Christ knew when to walk away from those who He knew were out to hurt him and He still died on the cross for their sins. So in the same way we have to die inside to ill-feelings and unforgiveness and the like. We have to hang our pride on the cross and become human sacrifices in obedient prayer for others, especially those in which we know hurt us, but only did it out of spiritual ignorance. Once Christ has given you this gift, this indwelt ability, it comes as easily and as natural as a pleasant thought or an emotion of any kind.

Part of the proof that you have been granted this gift, is you will walk into any situation, that in the past brought pain and sorrow without thinking twice about it, without saying to yourself, I don't want to experience that again, for I still have the memories of how it hurt me so bad the first time. It allows you the ability to brush aside sudden feelings of offense, and rejection also, and moments later have peace within yourself and the ability to see people as victims of this world and it's environment, instead of perpetrators of evil thoughts and actions. Unconditional love is the culmination of this gift, it's been said that you can never love completely until you make yourself vulnerable to those in whom you love.

This is a fact. So if you been hurt in a relationship, a marriage and divorce, a family situation, you will still be able to look those people in the eye, if they let you and say, I hold no grudges nor bitterness, and I love you unconditionally the way Christ loves me. It doesn't mean you'll stand before them continually and take their abuse, or let them hurt you again and again. It just means you'll pray for them, knowing that it is a sincere prayer for them to be able to recognize what Christ's will is for them, and you'll pray the most for them if they have never been saved, to get saved and find the truth of God's word and come to Him with a sincere heart. This my dear friends is unconditional love at it's root.

Add to your brotherliness ... love.  2nd Peter 1:7
Love is indefinite to most of us, we do not know what we mean when we talk about love. Love is the sovereign preference of one person for another, and spiritually Jesus demands that, that preference be for himself (cf. Luke 14:26). When the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, Jesus Christ is easily first; then we must practice the working out of these things mentioned by Peter.

The first thing God does is to, knock pretense and the pious pose right out of me. The Holy Spirit reveals that God loved me not because I was lovable, but because it was His nature to do so. Now, He says to me, show the same love to others - "Love as I have loved you." "I will bring any number of people around you, whom you can not respect, and you must exhibit My love to them as I have exhibited it to you." You won't reach it on tiptoe." Some of us have tried to, but we were soon tired.

"The Lord suffereth long. . . ." Let me look within and see His dealings with me." The knowledge that God has loved me to the uttermost, to the end of all my sin and meanness and selfishness and wrong, will send me forth into the world to love in the same way. God's love to me is inexhaustible, and I must love others from the bedrock of God's love in me. Growth in grace stops the moment I get (sic)  offended. I get offended (sic) because I have a peculiar person to live with. Just think how disagreeable I have been to God! Am I prepared to be so identified with the Lord Jesus that His life and His sweetness are being poured out through me all the time? Neither natural love nor divine love will remain unless it is cultivated. Love is spontaneous, but it has to be maintained by discipline (sic) in keeping an honest and sincere walk before God.

My hope for you is that you have had a prayer of salvation,
and if you haven't and you want to ask Christ into your heart and life, then I offer these words for you to repeat,
but only if your heart is sincere, because God knows it if you're not.

Dear God, I now know I have needed you and have
rejected your calling, so today, right now,
I ask Jesus Christ to come into my heart and my life,
and forgive me from all past sin and Lord cleanse me
from my unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus was
crucified for my sin, died, and was buried according
to the scriptures. I want you forever more to be
my guide and I want to follow you as a believer.
I ask for your strength to change my heart and
my earthly ways so that I can become a better
child in your kingdom. Show me how to depend
on you in all things. And show me how to do
your will in my life. I thank you and pray this
prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
